Ever since first hearing what the controls of the Wii were going to be, I thought it sounded perfect for an FPS (First Person Shooter). Then I got my Wii and promptly rented Red Steel, the only FPS launch title, and was just as promptly disappointed. There was just something so wrong with the controls that it was an almost unplayable game. Feeling let down, I continued to play Wii Sports and Zelda. Then when Call of Duty 3 came out, I quickly rented that and was fairly impressed with the graphics and playability of the point and shoot aspect with the wiimote. The biggest downfall was that you had to keep the wiimote pointed at the screen at all times, or else your character would go into a dizzying spin. Then I heard that one of the best games on the GameCube was getting a graphical and control scheme overhaul, and was being put on the Wii, complete with the bonus levels that were previously only available on the PS2.
I was a bit skeptical at first seeing as the first two shooter games weren’t the greatest, but after reading a few reviews, and thinking of how good the game was on the GC, I just had to play it. I got it for my birthday a few days ago and let me say, bravo Capcom, bravo. The controls are just right. They even used the in controller speaker really well, it clicks when you reload your weapon, and also makes static noise when you have an incoming message. Even though lots of people may think that this is just a port to the Wii, in some ways they are right, but it’s still a damn good game, and with the new controls it makes playing the game a whole new experience. My only complaint is that there is no strafing. Would it have killed you guys to make me be able to move my guy sideways.
All in all, I’d have to give this game a 9 out of 10. One of the best games to come out in recent times, and even though it’s not really a new game, it’s still really fun, and creepy to play.
I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Nintendo does Metroid right. Until then, I’ll have to battle bloodthirsty, crazy villagers in Resident Evil 4: Wii edition.
p.s. Adding that wii edition to the end of the title doesn’t exactly make it sound like the bloody and scary game it really is. It makes it sound like they made it with muppets that try and hug you to death or something.
